NAME: Pair of vintage Japanese Hagoita (battledore) paddles in glass front DISPLAY CASES

AGE: c1950's

SIZE: 18" and 6-1/4" at the widest point and 17-5/8", 6" at the widest point. The cases are 19" long.

CONDITION: The paddles are in so-so condition.

The woman on the left side (in the picture) has a hat missing from the top of her head, the string under her chin is broken in two places and the material covering the board in the background has disintegrated quite a bit as well as a few other areas. It appears there were 3D flowers she may have been looking at but there is only a single flower left that is attached to her shoulder. The backboard of the case has split in a couple of places.

The other woman has areas where the cloth has disintegrated including on her underkimono collar, which is totally gone. The back of the paddle has a small hole. The case has small dents or damage along the front side edges. The back is slightly warped.

NOTES: Battledores were used by young girls during the New Year's celebrations. Today they are more collected than played with. They are made three dimensional style with cloth, cotton, paper and paint.

The left paddle has a bell attached behind the head. The design is all hand painted as well as the artwork on the back. The other paddle also is all hand painted, front and back.

The display cases are what makes this lot special. I have only seen a couple of hagoita cases and they were rectangular in shape. These were made specifically for the shape of the hagoita. If you collect hagoita and want to display them safely, these are a must have!

There is no extra charge for shipping to U.S. addresses, however, they will be shipped parcel post. Because the box is considered oversized, a high surcharge will be added if sent by priority. You are welcome to pay the difference of approximately $25 to have them sent priority.
