NAME: Vintage Japanese Kintaro doll with Boy's Day carp and banners, original box with no lid

AGE: 1930's

SIZE: Doll is 7" (18cm) tall including the hat. The stand measures 10-5/8" x 4-1/2" x 1-9/16" (27.1cm x 11.5cm x 4cm). The height of the flag pole set in it's holder, from floor to tip, is 25-1/2" (65cm).

CONDITION: A lot of small problems, many related to age. Kintaro has a hairline crack in his right arm extending from the fingers to 2/3rds up, his neck has some of the finish chipping, and he has heavy hair loss. His paper mache hat has cracks and is chipping and his clothing is decaying with age. The tree bark is flaking off, the carp, which is also paper mache, has several cracks, large and small and the flag poles are warped. There is no lid to the original wood box.

NOTES: There are many legends and stories about Kintaro but in brief, he was a child of superhuman strength, was raised in the mountains by an ogress, was friends with the animals and is a symbol of a hero, brave and strong. As a child, wearing only a bib, he would sumo wrestle with bears.

Needs to be put together but it is all prefit with nails and holes. Very cute diorama.
