Vintage Japanese Doll, Momotaro & Ogre
Sold
NAME: Vintage Japanese costume doll of a young Momotaro or the Peach Boy standing victoriously over an ogre, original wood storage box. Accessories include a banner, a sword and a club.
AGE: Mid Showa (1926-1989), c1950's-60's
SIZE: Momotaro is 7-1/2" (19.1 cm). The ogre is approx. 6" long (15.3cm) and the stand is 8-5/16" x 5-1/16" x 1-3/4" high.
CONDITION: Excellent. The wood in the stand is separating and is cracking the finish. The storage box has some bug damage holes and has a gap from the wood separating, both on the back and on the lid.
NOTES: Momotaro or the Peach Boy is a much loved fairy tale. The story is of a childless older couple who come upon a large peach. When they open it, out pops Momotaro. He eventually goes off to fight the ogres and becomes a hero. Web-Japan.org has a cute version, complete with pictures: Momotaro.
This is a very well made doll for the age. His hands are carved wood and there is a lot of nice detail including a bit of metal trim and a very "spiked" club.
There is an old newspaper lining bottom dated May 16, 1968. Boy's day was May 5th, so, we might assume that this date is the last time it was displayed and stored.
