NAME: Set of vintage Japanese costume dolls, First Emperor Jimmu & Shoki, each with original storage box

AGE: Mid Showa (1926-1989), around 1950

SIZE: Jimmu 12-3/4" (32.5cm) tall. Shoki 13" (33.1cm)

Each storage crate is about 16" x 7-1/4" x 11" (40.8cm x 18.5cm x 28cm)

CONDITION: Being 50-60+ years old, they are in very good condition.

Jimmu is in good condition. Most of the feathers are missing from the arrows, the quiver is torn and his golden bird has paint missing in front and has some claws broken off (wire).

Shoki's right eyebrow had fallen off. It has been reattached but there are a few tiny white spots above and below where it pulled off the gofun finish. He has a crack between a couple of fingers on his left hand and his hat is in bad shape. The backside has cracked off and the front has the thick paint cracking and falling off. His sword is missing part of the guard.

One of the storage box lids has a couple of cracks and a small piece of wood has cracked off.

NOTES: Shoki's sword can be removed from the sheath. He also is wearing his demon belt. Jimmu's beads are made of glass

Nice quality dolls. The family name is on the lid of the boxes. These probably were purchased or received as a gift for a new baby boy for display each year on Boys Day (May 5) . An old sheet of newspaper in one of the boxes is dated s34.4.5 or April 5, 1959. More likely that was the last time it was displayed and stored as newspaper is not used with new items.

Post war, wood boxes were used a lot less because of the cost, however, quality items were/are still wood boxed. These boxes have separate lids as opposed to the sliding lids of earlier boxes.

These will ship PARCEL POST to U.S. addresses at no extra charge. They may be shipped in 2 separate packages. They would be considered oversized and there is a high surcharge if sent priority. You are welcome to upgrade to priority and pay the difference of an estimated $40 (more if two packages are sent) or you can opt to dump the boxes (very large and heavy). Then priority is no problem.
