Vintage Creative Kokeshi Kappa Pair
$13.00
Quantity Available: 1
Inventory Number: 71701
NAME: Vintage creative Japanese kokeshi Kappa pair, fishing pole and basket, on a stand, MIB
MAKER: Stamp on front of stand
SIZE: 4-5/8" (11.8cm) & 3-1/4" (8.2cm)
CONDITION: This collection is basically mint in box. There may be some age related issues and will be so noted. Most of the boxes show their age and may be warped, torn or have split corners.
The ring on the large Kappa is broken in the back with a gap. The wood could not have expanded that much so I'm guessing it was broken to put in place. Crack on the back of the smaller doll's head is probably due to long term drying.
NOTES: A Kappa is a Japanese mythical creature known to be mischievous and troublemakers. They lives in water (river or water imp) and have a hollow cavity atop their heads holding water that gives them their strength. It is said that should you come across a mischievous one, bow deeply as the Kappa will return the bow, spilling the fluid and become so weak that it must return to the water.
Blue felt is used to represent the cavity.
The owner of these fabulous vintage kokeshi had purchased them from all over Japan and then stored them in their original gift boxes for all these years (50's/60's). Great find with some unusual dolls!
