Traditional Drummer Pull Toy, New, Damaged
Sold
NAME: Traditional Japanese drummer pull toy
MAKER: Fumio Tsuta (Yajiro kokeshi artist and toy maker)
SIZE: About 5-7/8" tall, 4-3/4" long
CONDITION: New but the right arm broke off in transit. The loose arm caused a few light dents and the box was slightly banged up.
The peg holding the arm has been repaired. It was not a good break. It broke off "flat" with splinters. Since the pieces did not have a good surface to hold, a metal "pin" and glue was used. It works fine. You don't really see it as in the picture as the arm was moved to get the shot. Should it break off again, the bamboo stick should be replaced.
NOTES: Just as kokeshi craftsmen, this trade is handed down from generation to generation. Mr. Tsuta's father as well as brother, Mamoru were also Yajiro craftsmen and toy makers. Both have passed.
This toy won the Minister of Education Award at the 28th All-Japan Kokeshi Contest in 1986. When pulled, his head turns around and each arm moves up and down banging on the drum in turn.
