NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi, Tale of Genji
MAKER: Sansaku Sekiguchi
SIZE: 2-3/4"h x 5" x 4" (not including the stand). The stand is 5-3/4" x 4-1/2" x 3/4" high.
CONDITION: Good condition with a little bit of excess glue by Genji's head in the front and a dent on the back.
NOTES: The dolls are attached to the stand. Included is the signature board and a gold screen. The design was done by the burnt wood technique.
From the Book, "Tale of Genji" written by (Ms.) Murasake Shikibu in the 11th century. It's considered the greatest work of Japanese literature and the first novel in the world.
Current production of this doll finds Genji on the opposite side. Current price for this new is approx. $180.00 for the doll itself. The older design has a simpler design and less paint.
Mr. Sekiguchi was born in 1925 and is still busy creating his masterpieces. He is a multi-award winning artist which includes multiple prime minister awards. He is perhaps the most known kokeshi maker worldwide.
