Quantity Available: 1

  • Sake Jug/Bottle, Antique Japanese Folkcraft #31260

NAME: Japanese antique ceramic sake jug or bottle

AGE: These jugs were used from Meiji to early Showa period. (Some accounts say late Edo period).

SIZE: 10-1/2" tall (25.6cm), 5-1/4" (13.3cm) diameter at the widest point

CONDITION: In general, these bottles were rather crudely made (flaws during manufacture) and this bottle is no exception. The bottom is not exactly flat and does jiggle a bit but it's in excellent post manufacture condition with no flaws or defects noted.

NOTES: These jugs were rentals or on loan from the liquor shops for use by "common" people. They were made all over Japan with the largest production centers in Tanba, Takada and Arita. The Japanese name translates in English to "poor liquor bottle" or "commuter bottle". The name of the shop, as well as the name of the liquor it held, were usually printed on the bottle.

The color is the white or greyish white often seen in these jugs.

Wonderful folk art piece.

International Customers: Postage will probably be at least US$50.00. A Paypal invoice will be issued for the difference between actual cost less the amount paid with the order.
