A lot of lacquerware in Japan today is being made from a synthetic resin. Because of their advanced technology in this area, it is very difficult to tell the difference. I don't believe it matters as much as the finish the item has, use-wise (the synthetics are more durable) or cost-wise.

I believe the base on this vase is a synthetic resin material. With a wood box, you would think it would be wood but it shows how unimportant it is. It is also wood boxed because it's fine Ouchi lacquerware.
