NAME: Japanese lacquered wood Emperor and Empress Ouchi Doll set with wood box, stand and explanation sheet in Japanese.

SIZE: 1-1/2" (4cm) The Emperor is a fraction taller with his hat. The diameter is 1-3/4" (4.3cm) and the stand is 3-1/2" x 1-13/16"

CONDITION: Light spots or scratches on the faces. The Empress has a tiny paint chip missing on her left shoulder and the male has a couple of tiny paint chips on his gold fan. The Emperor's color has faded with age. He was once a darker green color. He also has a shallow ding on his lower front. There are light scratches on the stand.

NOTES: The famous Ouchi lacquerware comes from Yamaguchi city and dates back hundreds of years. The most familiar of the Ouchi products are these Emperor & Empress doll sets. You can read background information on Ouchi lacquerware here: Ouchi

I was able to find a website in Japan selling brand new Ouchi doll pairs. The current cost of a set with a 1-3/4" (4.5cm) diameter is 5100yen or US$63.75. A set with a 3-1/4" diameter (8.4cm) is 19,600y or US$245.00. (Exchange rate as of 6/16/11).
