Modern Creative Kokeshi, Sadao Kishi, 19" (#2)
Sold
NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi called "Innocent"
MAKER: Sadao Kishi
SIZE: 19" (48.2cm)
CONDITION: A few mostly minor to small dents. Two small "flat" type of dents, one on the left side and one on forehead. Two white spots on the top back of the head may be water spots. Some wood age spotting around the top of the head and below the waist. Small hole on the top of the bun. You can see tool marks circling this spot. It probably had this defect and the artist recentered the wood.
NOTES: Mr. Kishi was born in 1932 and has passed. He was a mutli award winning artist. He won top prize, Prime Minister Award at least a couple of times including one for this doll in 1968.
The wheat pattern is carved.
I would consider this a "classic" kokeshi. In the early days of creative kokeshi, prize winning dolls were very popular and more affordable compared to today's winners. It's why they tend to be more readily available.
