NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi
MAKER: Muhitsu Miyahima
SIZE: 9-1/2" (24cm), 6" diameter at the widest point
CONDITION: At one time, a piece of wood had broken off the hair on the left edge. Can barely be seen from the top, more so from the bottom but not too bad. Other than that there may be a few light scratches or dings. The small piece of wood that supports the stand also appears to have broken and was repaired
NOTES: Name of the doll is Bairin or plum grove. Comes with the signature board. The whole body has facetted like cuts. The plum tree is carved as well as the flowers with some burnt wood work inside the flowers.
NOTES: Mr. Miyajima was born in 1929. From 1942, he studied traditional kokeshi under Kichitaro Kobayashi (Yamagata) and in the late 40's, changed to creative. Won many awards including the coveted Prime Minister's prize in 1973.
