NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi, Year of the Horse, original box

MAKER: Kouson Sato

SIZE: 15-3/4" (40.2cm), diameter 6-5/8" (17cm), weight 11 lbs in box. Stand is 10-3/4" x 7-1/2" x 7/8"

CONDITION: The doll is in mint condition except the green bow on her top knot has a few vertical cracks and may have broken off at one time.

NOTES: Includes original box, stand & miniature stick horse in it's own small, damaged box. I'm guessing that the stick horse was originally given out with the doll. Newspaper in the box is dated 9/31/1990.

Year of the Horse: 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 & 2014.

The doll is of a precious child. The art work is done in traditional Japanese sumi-e style, which is brush painting with black ink. This highlights the talent and versatility Kouson has as an artist.

Ms. Kouson's kokeshi faces are usually easily recognizable. They are soft and gentle looking. She has been making kokeshi for over 50 years, and I believe she is retired now. Aside from her most popular laughing pair, Ms. Kouson's dolls are generally large (tall) with scenery and flowers. Will be listing more of her dolls in the near future including some other hard to find Zodiac animals.
