Modern Creative Kokeshi, Kobayashi, 22", (#2)
Sold
NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi
MAKER: Inosuke Kobayashi
SIZE: 22" (55.5cm), weight is almost 11.5 pounds
CONDITION: Good. However, the wood is flawed (discolored) and has a lot of little marks and tiny bumps on the back side. Besides being a little different in color, it didn't absorb the stain evenly. Also, the varnish is aging and lifting on the design giving a silver appearance. Some of it is cracking off now and you can see the color underneath.
NOTES: Inosuke Kobayashi was born in 1931. He has passed but haven't been able to pinpoint the year. Multi prize winner including the coveted Prime Minister award in 1979. My information only goes to 1983.
First time seeing this design. Assuming this doll, even though it has a different design, is the the same as the clover doll, the name the doll translates to "Evening". This came from an "old family" collection.
Extraordinary doll. Certainly one of his high end creations. Here is a picture of a privately owned doll on display in Japan: Kobayashi. Since they are hand made, these dolls do vary. The one in the picture has a different style of hair. The wood flaws apparently didn't bother the artist, don't let it bother you.
