  • Modern Creative Kokeshi, Kobayashi, 18.25" #72989 Modern Creative Kokeshi, Kobayashi, 18.25" #72989

NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi

MAKER: Inosuke Kobayashi

SIZE: 18.25" (46.5cm), weight approx. 18 pounds

CONDITION: A piece of wood had broken off at some point on her cape above her face. The repair was done pretty well. You can only see it from the top when you are close. The bottom is more apparent but one does not look at the doll from that angle.

There are also three stress cracks on her left side that probably happened in transit here. The wood in the areas where the cracks are (including the top break) have no support. When dolls are shipped, they are packed in very large boxes. This doll being so large and heavy was on the bottom and there could have been 40+ pounds of weight on her. I was fortunate to have had this doll once before and she suffered the same problem but on the other side. Sometimes leaving things be is for the best but if you have the need to repair her, an art conservator may be best thing but make sure they are well versed in wood.

Other than that, there may be some minor scratches. The right side has some natural flawed wood.

NOTES: The doll is called "Toi Sora". This IS the doll that won the Prime Minister Award in 1979 and one of Mr. Kobayashi's most important works. "Toi Sora" translates to "Distant Sky". As explained to me, it's hard to literally translate but it roughly means "She is remembering her far away country". You can see the doll in the Usaburo Museum (and online). The design is all carved and is made from one piece of wood. She is artistically nonsymmetrical. She stands with her right arm over her head. Her cape has a flowing effect to it. She is outstanding, very beautiful and very large.

As mentioned, I had this doll about 10 years ago. I have only seen her one other time (beside the museum and my other one). You may not see her again any time soon.

Inosuke Kobayashi was born in 1931 and has passed. Multi prize winner including the coveted Prime Minister award in 1979 (this doll). My information only goes to 1983.
