NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi

MAKER: Hideo Ishihara

SIZE: 11-7/8" (30cm)

CONDITION: Few smaller dents with nothing noticeable from the front. Stain was applied to the grain in the wood and the belt (obi) but has now faded on the front side.

NOTES: Mr. Ishihara was born in Tokyo in 1925 and passed in 1999 at the age of 74. He was registered as a traditional Narugo artist. His grandfather, Iwataro Onuma, was the originator of the Naruko traditional kokeshi. Mr. Ishihara was trained in Narugo style but found it too confining and switched to creative shortly after. From 1959 through 1969, he won 60 prizes as a creative artist including the prime minister award

Fabulous doll that is always expensive in Japan. The name is "Setting Sun". (If you have the little red Colorbook, you can find this on page 24). It looks like a red wash of some sort is applied which sticks to porous area like the grain.

Postage will invoiced if the cost is above what is paid with the order.
