Modern Creative Kokeshi, Ishihara, 12" #73227
Sold
NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi
MAKER: Hideo Ishihara
SIZE: 12-1/8" (31cm), diameter at widest point 6.5" (16.5cm), weight - almost 8 pounds
CONDITION: A few small dents, nothing noticeable. A 1" scratch on the back of the head and a small chip in the wood along the edge of the hair in the back also. White scuff mark on the front of the hair and a small spot on the left side of the body.
There are natural wood flaws that were apparent at the time of creation. A crack across the top of head was wood filled and left. It was not sanded and was painted over so there's a little bump all along the crack. On the left side, bottom of the hair, is a larger scrape and was also painted over. These flaws did not trouble the artist and shouldn't trouble you.
NOTES: Mr. Ishihara was born in Tokyo in 1925 and passed in 1999 at the age of 74. He was registered as a traditional Narugo artist. His grandfather, Iwataro Onuma, was the originator of the Naruko traditional kokeshi. Mr. Ishihara was trained in Narugo style but found it too confining and switched to creative shortly after. From 1959 through 1969, he won 60 prizes as a creative artist including the prime minister award.
Gorgeous doll in a hefty and unusual shape.
