NAME: Japanese ittobori carving of a rat, representing zodiac year of the rat, in wood box.

MAKER: Burnt wood engraving and a carved character on the bottom. Stamp on the box

SIZE: 1-7/8" (4.7cm) tall, 3-1/2" (9cm) long

CONDITION: Good

NOTES: Briefly, Ittobori is a carving technique. The name literally means "one chisel cut". You see the angles made by the chisel, they are not smoothed out. An art form that goes back hundreds of years, the most popular subjects are Noh and the 12 Animals of the Zodiac.

Year of the Rat include the years 2008, 1996, 1984, 1972 1960, 1948, 1936 & 1924.
