NAME: Creative Japanese kokeshi pair with the Old Couple of Takasago
MAKER: Signed
SIZE: The male is 14-1/4" (36.2cm), the female is a tad taller, combined weight is 4-1/2 pounds
CONDITION: These were purchased with a cardboard box, however, by the time they arrived here, there was no box. They look unused but they have some age to them. What's left of the plastic wrap has some very yellowed tape attached.
The female has a few dents on the head incuding a few light dents or scratches on the lower left face. There is also a dent behind Uba's head. A large flaw in the wood that has been filled in by the maker can be seen on her back. The smudge on the back of her head as been removed.
The male has mostly light dents and/or dings on the head. There is also a chunk of paint chipped off of Jo's beard. The paint is thick there and thick paint can dry up with time, chip and break off. He has some tape and tape residue stuck on the back of his head and a wood flaw with pitting and glue or varnish on the top of his head. Part of the plastic wrap is taped on the bottom so I have not checked underneath.
NOTES: They do not have a finish coat. Uba's kimono is very well painted.
The "Old Couple" is a noh play. The man's name is Jo and carries a rake and his wife is Uba with broom in hand. They symbolize long life and happiness and these story dolls are often given as wedding gifts. He rakes in the good, she sweeps out the bad.
These will ship to U.S. addresses fully insured parcel post.
