NAME: Antique Japanese costume doll of a young lady, probably a Maiko (Geisha apprenctice).
AGE: Taisho (1912-1926) or a little earlier
SIZE: 9-3/8" (24cm) including the stand
CONDITION: Excellent condition for the age. There is a little chipping along the face where the hair is attached. It can be filled in with pencil if it's troublesome. The back of the left geta is cracked and the piece sticks out a bit. Light soiling of the hands.
The umbrella is falling apart. It is made of wood and paper and paper does not last as long as wood. It was banded before it reached here, and will not be opened as it will cause further damage.
NOTES: Maiko and Geisha wear very long kimono and high geta. When Maiko go outside, the bottoms of their kimono are pulled up and tied high so that their feet and geta can be seen.
Her face is coated with gofun (egg shell and glue in Taisho, oyster shell in Meiji and earlier). Her mouth is open and you can see the teeth and tongue. Her hands/fingers are gracefully poised. Lovely doll.
This doll will ship worldwide at no additional charge.
