Antique Japanese Yatate, c1850. A yatate is a portable writing set that dates to the Kamakura period 1192-1333. A yatate has a dipper for the ink (sumi) and an attached tube for a bamboo brush. They were either attached to the belt (obi) or tucked inside. This yatate is made of bronze, is 6-1/4" long and still has the original bamboo brush. There is a ring around the barrel with a smaller ring attached where the cord would be threaded for hanging. And hung it was. Much use and wear shows. There are three deeper dents on front side and one on top and a few minor ones. The ink barrel with hinged top are fine. A wad of cotton (?) is still inside. The brush is still soft at the very tip, about 1/4".
