Traditional Yajiro Kokeshi with wooden "umbrella" top in celebration of New Years made by 3rd generation kokeshi craftsman, Hideyuki Sato of Kijidokoro-Sato. New Years is probably the most celebrated holiday in Japan. "Enjoying tops on New Year is very popular custom for Japanese people", said Mr. Sato. Both the kokeshi and top sit on a wood stand measuring 2-7/8" x almost 6" long. The doll, wearing a winter scarf, measures 3-5/8" with a base diameter of 1-1/4". The toy top has a diameter of 2" and the stem size is variable. One measure 2-1/4, the other 2-1/2". Just realized the dolls and the tops are painted a little different from each other. One top has rokuro lines, the other has a swirl pattern, produced by reversing the machine while painting. The doll colors match the tops. Will get up a picture of the other set shortly.
