Wooden Rooster Ring folk craft

Sold
  • Wooden Rooster Ring folk craft

Unusual and interesting Japanese wooden folk craft with roosters face to face, carved in a circular shape. There is writing and signature stamps on the piece and comes in it's original box. I can't read it but it probably is from the seaside town of Tanabe where there is a Tokei Shrine or "cockfight shrine". Around the year 1180 a pivotal cockfight took place there with a white bird representing the Genji clan (Minamoto) and a red bird for the Heike. At the time these were the two greatest warrior clans. As the story goes the Genji bird won and Genji eventually went on to win the war, which is considered one of the great turning points in Japanese history. This piece has a 3-1/4" diameter and is 3" high. Nice smooth surface, it's in mint condition.
