NAME: Vintage Japanese costume doll of a young lady playing Otedama (bean bag) game
AGE: 1950-60's
SIZE: Doll is approx. 7-1/2" (19cm) tall and 6-3/4" (17.5cm) at the widest point. The stand is 9" x 7-3/4" (22.8cm x 20cm)
CONDITION: Excellent with only a little bit of hair loss at the top of the head. The spot on her left hand, as seen in the picture, has been removed.
NOTES: HIGH QUALITY DOLL. The face has the gofun finish and her hands and feet are made of wood. All of the fabrics used, including the bean bags, appear to be of silk or silk crepe. The kimono is real shibori (tie dyed). She kneels on a zabuton (cushion) and has a bean bag in each hand and three more on the floor. She is attached to the stand which is made of wood.
Otedama is a juggling bean bag game which peaked in popularity after the war. Other toys were scarce in Japan and these could be made at home from scraps of fabric. There were songs that were sung while playing and is pretty much a lost tradition today.
