NAME: Japanese Tanuki or raccoon dog
SIZE: 4-1/2"
CONDITION: A couple of minor dents on the body with a little bit larger one on the right side. The cloth edges have a few loose threads.
NOTES: Made of Cryptomeria Japonica or Japanese cedar. The species with this wonderful grain is said to grow in only one area of Japan.
A Tanuki is capable of changing shapes in Japanese folklore. Often seen with a sake bottle, it is the mascot for many temples and restaurants as this critter represents fertility and plenty. This tanuki's body is a sake bottle with a brocade cloth cover.
