Kokeshi nodder of Shimizu Jirocho measuring 4-1/2" tall. Shimizu Jirocho (1820-1893) was a historical Yakuza (Japanese mafia) boss. Some of the terms describing him are "outlaw turned hero", "robin hood", "godfather", "gangster boss", "legendary gambler boss but chivalrous". He was also an undefeated swordsman and reformed himself at the age of 48. He helped develop Shimizu Port and is believed to be the first to have founded an English Conversational School. This doll's cape and hat rim has done in the lathe chatter style. The textured pattern needs much skill as it is difficult to control. There is quite a bit of varnish crazing which gives it a whitish film look. Some of the varnish has chipped which in turn pulled off a few chips of paint but it's a nice doll anyway.
