Japanese antique ceramic sake jug or bottle measures 10-1/4" tall, not including the cork, and weighs 2 pounds, 2 ounces.

These jugs were rentals or on loan from the liquor shops for use by "common" people. They were used from Meiji to early Showa period. (Some accounts say late Edo period). They were made all over Japan with the largest production centers in Tanba, Takada and Arita. The Japanese name translates in English to "poor liquor bottle" or "commuter bottle". The name of the shop as well as the name liquor it held were usually printed on the bottle.

Usually rather crudely made (flaws in the manufacture), this bottle is exceptionally nice. I also think it's a later piece. It's very smooth and is glazed on the bottom except for the rim. It has a few tiny bubbles and some minor fading spots on some of the characters. There are no cracks or chips or even crazing in the bottle. It has a cork which is a little chewed up and original rope around the neck.

Great folkcraft/folk art pieces!
