NAME: Japanese Ouchi lacquered wood Daruma Bell
SIZE: 2-1/4" (5.8cm) tall, 2" (5.2cm) diameter
CONDITION: A small ding on the left side that did not break the finish. A few scratch-like marks at the bottom, in front.
NOTES: The famous Ouchi lacquerware comes from Yamaguchi city and dates back hundreds of years. The most familiar of the Ouchi products are the Emperor & Empress doll sets. You can read background information on Ouchi lacquerware here: Ouchi
It very hard to find Ouchi dolls other than the Emperor and Empress outside of Japan. This is the first time I've seen Daruma or any other doll other than Hina members.
