Vintage Japanese Ouchi lacquered wood fan shaped frame and wall hanging.
Ouchi lacquer comes from Yamaguchi City and dates back to the 12/13th centuries. Ouchi (important Feudal Lord/ Family) was a great patron of this lacquer and did much to promote it, hence it became known as Ouchi lacquer. Also, the Ouchi gold leaf diamond design, known as "Ouchi diamonds", was derived from the original Ouchi mon (family crest). The autumn grass pattern with the diamonds is the best loved design and the combination represents prosperity. Outside of Japan, the best known Ouchi pieces are the dolls. These dolls are generally roundish shape, highly lacquered and represent the emperor and empress. Ouchi products are very expensive in today's market with a set of dolls running roughly between $50 to $1,800 depending on the size.
The fan measures just short of 24" at the longest point and 14" to the top of the arc. There are four pieces of purple string threaded through the fan which would hold the picture/item in place. Suitable for a picture measuring 9-3/4" x 10-3/4". There is also a heavier string to hang on the wall.
In very good condition with a few minor scratches and light marks indicating where the edges were of whatever hung there. The purple strings have some fading. I comes in it's orginal packaging. The bag that slips over it has makers marks. The box is quite ragged and is more like a top and bottom as most of the edges are broken or missing.
It's a unique piece. It looks fine as simply a wall hanging. It will also stand leaning against a wall so it can be used as a nice background to a collection.
