NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi

CONDITION: Several, various sized dents on the back of the head. Small knot under the varnish that you can see the cracks on the lower back and small spot in the same area with the varnish missing. Various scratches here and there.
These dolls tend to have heavy age spots and finish difficulties. Usually the finish (varnish) ages giving a whitish appearance and then either cracks and flakes off. On this doll, the varnish is in good shape.
NOTES: The name is "Chigozakura" or Baby Cherry Blossoms. It's hard to capture the beauty of this doll in pictures. The wood is natural on top and varying size stripes of black and red fill in the rest of the doll with a high gloss finish. It's a "classic" Watanabe. She comes in three sizes. This is the middle size.
Mr. Watanabe was born in 1917 and passed in 2007. Winner of many awards including top prize, the Prime Minister Award several times. This doll won one in 1963.
