NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi
MAKER: Usaburo doll. Signature label on the bottom. Usaburo is a family of kokeshi artists. There may also be a signature on the right side of the doll.
SIZE: 6-3/8"
CONDITION: A few light dings and scratches. The bottom has a heavy coat of white paint and vanish and is cracking up. The center of the wood (1/8"), which is slightly off center of the doll, has no paint. The doll is darker in the front and I have seen this condition referred to as "sunburned".
NOTES: The kimono and hair outlines are burnt wood style. The rice is painted. The hair does appear green.
This doll can be purchase new in Japan. Current models look quite different. The wood is either bleached or painted white and the cost is about $66 plus a lot of shipping. This doll weighs almost 1-1/2 pounds.
