NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi, signature board
MAKER: Seiho Aida* (aka Harumine Aida)
SIZE: 5-7/8" (14.7cm), diameter 6-5/8" (17cm), just under 3 pounds
CONDITION: Excellent condition with 3 very minor, very small dents on the back of the head.
NOTES: The name of the doll translates to "Sunlight" or "Sunshine". The hair strands are carved all the way around the head as well as her kimono. Lovely dark wood, probably Keyaki (Japanese Zelkova).
NOTES: Mr. Aida was born in 1926 and started crafting kokeshi in 1947. He is a multi award winning artist. Some of his works are quite unusual and unique but he's also done some very beautiful pieces as this doll.
*Seiho Aida is the way this name is translated in a directory issued by a kokeshi association (in Japan), dated July, 1983. The directory is both in English and Japanese. I have seen the name translated differently (Harumine) but will use this translation as the more accurate one.
