NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi pair, original box
MAKER: Hideo Ishihara
SIZE: 7-1/8" & 8-1/4 (18.2 & 21.1cm)
CONDITION: They look unused and just about mint with a light scratch on the back of the female's head.
NOTES: Mr. Ishihara was born in Tokyo in 1925 and passed in 1999 at the age of 74. He was registered as a traditional Narugo artist. His grandfather, Iwataro Onuma, was the originator of the Naruko traditional kokeshi. Mr. Ishihara was trained in Narugo style but found it too confining and switched to creative shortly after. From 1959 through 1969, he won 60 prizes as a creative artist including the prime minister award.
The box has a label marked "Poetic Craft". Interesting artistic pair made from gorgeous keyaki wood.
