Modern Creative Kokeshi, Masao Watanabe, 17-3/4"
Sold
Modern Japanese creative kokeshi by famous maker Masao Watanabe (1917-2007). He won many awards, including the Prime Minister award for this doll. The Prime Minister award is the top prize awarded in kokeshi exhibits/competitions. The name of this doll is "Chigozakura" or baby cherry blossoms. She measures 17-3/4" and weighs over 8 pounds.
It's hard to capture the beauty of this doll in pictures. The wood is natural on top and varying size stripes of black and red fill in the rest of the doll.
This is an older doll and has it's share of scratches in the varnish and a few dents on the body. There are some bigger dents and flaws on the lower back of the head. This is a very large, top heavy doll and looks as if it repeatedly fell on something. There are age spots across the middle of the face. They show up well in the picture but in person, they are not very obvious. She has a band across the top of her head with a little paint scraped off on the right side.
Very beautiful doll that looks much better in person than in pictures.
