Modern Creative Kokeshi, Kobayashi, 14" #73226
Sold
NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi
MAKER: Inosuke Kobayashi
SIZE: 14" (35.5cm), diameter at the widest point 6-3/8" (16.5cm) weight 6 lbs
CONDITION: Assorted dents, scratches, dings and scrapes on and about the hair. Nothing too big or significant. There's a short but deeper dent on the red part of her right sleeve and the lighter green color on the back has areas of fading.
NOTES: Name of the dolls is Itoshigo (いとし子), beloved or dear child. Signature board included but the hand written info and artist stamp are quite faded.
The design is done by the burnt wood technique and covers all but a 2 to 3" strip on the back. This would have been a lot of work as there are multiple different designs. Also, this particular dolls is a little different than others as it has more dimension. Most of Kobayashi's Itoshigo dolls are more cylindrical with the kimono sleeves rising a little higher than the body. This one is quite flared toward the bottom giving her an interesting shape. Don't recall seeing one quite like this.
Inosuke Kobayashi was born in 1931. He has passed but haven't been able to pinpoint the year. Multi prize winner including the coveted Prime Minister award in 1979. My information only goes to 1983.
