NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi
MAKER: Kaihei Katase
SIZE: 4-3/8" (11.3cm)
CONDITION: Several dents in a row by her bangs on the right. Few other minor dents and/or scratches elsewhere. Some darkening of the mothers face and the top of the head of the baby.
NOTES: Mr. Katase was born in 1921. He was one of the earliest creative artist starting around 1946. Multi prize winner including the Prime Minister Prize in 1954 at the first "All Japan Kokeshi Contest".
This is a very rare doll, not only the doll itself, but this is the first time I've seen it in the natural wood! Normally seen is a red with black and gold swirls. This doll is also a large size. Had one last year about the same size which was the first large one I had ever seen. In June of 2009, this doll (the regular smaller size), was listed at $374.99 elsewhere and sold.
