Modern Creative Kokeshi, Ishihara, 6"
Sold
NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi
MAKER: Hideo Ishihara
SIZE: 6" (15cm)
CONDITION: A bit of irregularity on the bangs but it looks more like wood flaws under the paint than any thing else. There are three tiny lines of what looks like green glitter paint where the sleeves come together on the mid front.
NOTES: The body is cut on an angle with the highest end on the front right. Rather unusual. Very lovely doll.
Mr. Ishihara was born in Tokyo in 1925 and passed in 1999 at the age of 74. He was registered as a traditional Narugo artist. His grandfather, Iwataro Onuma, was the originator of the Naruko traditional kokeshi. Mr. Ishihara was trained in Narugo style but found it too confining and switched to creative shortly after. From 1959 through 1969, he won 60 prizes as a creative artist including the prime minister award
