NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi

MAKER: Hideo Ishihara

SIZE: 8.75" (22cm)

CONDITION: Several light scrapes on top of the head, short deeper scratch on the bottom edge. There is also a knot on the bottom edge that has caused a little irregularity in the wood.

NOTES: Mr. Ishihara was born in Tokyo in 1925 and passed in 1999 at the age of 74. He was registered as a traditional Narugo artist. His grandfather, Iwataro Onuma, was the originator of the Naruko traditional kokeshi. Mr. Ishihara was trained in Narugo style but found it too confining and switched to creative shortly after. From 1959 through 1969, he won 60 prizes as a creative artist including the prime minister award.

The red obi has painted flowers with petals of different design. Very nice!
