NAME: Modern creative Japanese kokeshi

CONDITION: Few light scratches in one spot on the upper left side of the body.
NOTES: Mr. Ishihara was born in Tokyo in 1925 and passed in 1999 at the age of 74. He was registered as a traditional Narugo artist. His grandfather, Iwataro Onuma, was the originator of the Naruko traditional kokeshi. Mr. Ishihara was trained in Narugo style but found it too confining and switched to creative shortly after. From 1959 through 1969, he won 60 prizes as a creative artist including the prime minister award
Fabulous doll that is always expensive in Japan. The name is "Setting Sun". (If you have the little red Colorbook, you can find this on page 24). It looks like a red wash of some sort is applied which sticks to porous area like the grain. Then in between are a lot of dots and dashes. Can't figure how this is accomplished.
