Modern Creative Kokeshi, 10-1/2"

Modern Japanese creative kokeshi by Tamura Noboru measuring 10-1/2" with a head diameter of about 4". This is an older doll, at least from the 70's.

The cap, shoulder and bottom is done by the "chatter" technique. It's supposed to be hard to control so much skill is needed. The body is decorated with plum flowers and gold leaves but also incorporates the wood grain and a little color into the design. The front of the doll is simply stained but graduates to a darker stain with a green tinge in the back, still allowing the wood grain to come through. Later or new versions of this doll are simply green stained.

There is one larger dent on the upper front body and age appropriate smaller dents and scratches elsewhere with a cluster in the middle of the back of the head. A little varnish is missing around the mouth.

It is hard to capture the beauty of this doll in pictures.
