Quantity Available: 1
Inventory Number: 70439
Group of three (3) vintage Kobouzu (monk apprentice or trainee) Japanese kokeshi dolls. They sit in a mortar. One has a pestle and one has a hat. They are nodders but are made a little differently than the norm. Normally the head is attached to the neck stem and is inserted into the body. These have the stem attached to the body and inserted into the head so only the head moves. They do not nod as freely this way. They range in height from about 2-1/4" to 3"
This is part of a family collection of folk crafts from the 50's and 60's. The father traveled to all parts of Japan on business and would bring home souvenirs for the family. The smallest doll has two tiny chips in the paint seen right above the pestle. The tallest doll has a little worn area on the top edge of the mortar and the middle height doll has paint chipping on the front top edge of the mortar as well as a few elsewhere (on the bowl). There is some age appropriate soiling.
