Kinbeko (Golden Ox), Japanese Wooden Folk Craft
Sold
Japanese vintage carved wood golden ox (kinbeko). Oxen were used to carry out gold from the mines and statues made of gold were created to honor their work. Later, folk toys were created as well. This ox is carved of wood, painted gold and carries money boxes on it's back. It measures 7-1/2" long , is 5" tall including the money boxes and weighs in at about 1 pound. The age is probably from the 50's-60's. Two chips of paint missing on the nose, slightly corroded eyes (metal), rusting of a large bell atop the head, minor rusting of the bells around the neck and age related soiling (the rope around the money boxes, the straw, etc.) are the noticeable flaws but overall, in considerably good condition for the age.
