  • Kijiyama Traditional Kokeshi, Ogura, 18-3/4" Kijiyama Traditional Kokeshi, Ogura, 18-3/4"

NAME: Kijiyama traditional Japanese kokeshi

MAKER: Kyutaro Ogura

SIZE: 18-3/4" (48cm)

CONDITION: There are two water spots. One is on the right side of the face where there are two short horizontal paint lines of bleeding. The spot has not damaged or discolored the wood. It only took off the finish. The other is on the top right side of the head where there is a little red bleeding. This spot is missing the finish and is slightly darker.

There are three cracks, one in the front (1-1/2") and two in the back (1-3/4" and a hairline). All three have been woodfilled and the one in front has been painted over. This means they were there at the time of creation.

Interesting bump on the top of the head. This is where it's attached to the machine. Was never completely shaved or sanded level with the head.

This came in a slightly oversized corrugated box with no markings. Don't know if it's original but it is in poor condition. It looks like it has been through the mail a couple of times as is (not wrapped).

NOTES: Mr. Ogura passed in 1998 at the age of 91. He was a very famous and popular artist. His dolls are still very much collected and prized. Current prices in Japan at the high end are at 18,000yen (US$230) to 40,000yen (US$512).

This was probably special ordered as there is something written, including a name, to the right of the artist signature.

A majority of his dolls I have seen have natural wood flaws or defects. It obviously wasn't a concern.

I recall reading that family members helped turn the dolls but they were only painted by Kyutaro.

This will ship parcel post to U.S. addresses as the oversized rates would apply. You are always welcomed to pay for the upgrade to priority. Had you shipped this from Japan, the cost would have been about US$108 for air or $79 for SAL.

Very large, very beautiful and in very good condition.
