Kijiyama Traditional Kokeshi, Miyahara, 16-1/8"
$110.00
Quantity Available: 1
Inventory Number: 71075
NAME: Kijiyama traditional Japanese Kokeshi
MAKER: Yasuji Miyahara
SIZE: 16-1/8", base diameter 4-1/2", weight 4 pounds
CONDITION: Most of the imperfections are due to natural wood flaws.
The wood used is quite pitted as can be seen on the bottom of the doll. This pitting can be found along the rim at the "shoulder", and to a lesser extent, around the neck and on top of the head. Upon closer inspection, you can see paint inside the pitted areas, which means they were there at the time of manufacture. If the doll had been attacked by bugs, the paint would be missing.
In addition, there are 4 short grooves at the base on the right side (paint in the grooves) and a crack can be seen on the bottom of the doll that extends up the left side about 2 inches. It looks like it was lightly woodfilled. Finally, the area by the eyes looks kind of scratchy but it's under the finish and the eye paint is not disturbed.
As far as other problems, there is a 1/4" dent on the back of the head which is a little deeper than "normal" but keep in mind that this is a large doll, a dent towards the neck of the doll in front and a few light scratches can be seen.
NOTES: Mr. Miyahara is said to be a self taught kokeshi maker. His dolls are quite distinct and hard to come. The faces are very precious. The signature can be read as Yasuji or Taiji but was told Yusuji was probably correct for this artist.
