NAME: Japanese ema prayer board with a 3 dimensional carved wooden Tengu face

SIZE: The board height is 3-7/16" to the top point, 5-1/2" long, Tengu is about 2-1/2" long and his face to the tip of his nose is 1-1/2"

CONDITION: Several scratches on the front and several dents and scratches on the back of the board. There is a oil or ink-like stain around the right eye with a spot on the board to the right of the eye as well. The hanging cord has faded.

NOTES: Part of a collection from Japan.

Tengu is a goblin in Japanese folklore. He is traditionally red with a large nose. The wood was left natural on this one.

An ema board or prayer board is a method by which people make wishes, prayers or thanks to the dieties by writing it down on the board and hanging it at a shrine. The art work traditionally depicts the Zodiac animals, historic stories, folklore characters and stories, etc., but modern characters are also included now.
