NAME: Japanese ema or prayer board, burnt wood style, of a person in a shi shi lion costume.

CONDITION: Few light scratches and dings. Light fading in lower left corner of the board.

NOTES: This appears to be at a festival. A boy is looking at the drum playing shi shi lion.

Not sure of the technique used but it is some kind of burnt wood style. Perhaps a large branding type iron is used.

An ema board or prayer board is a method by which people make wishes, prayers or thanks to the dieties by writing it down on the board and hanging it at a shrine. The art work traditionally depicts the Zodiac animals, historic stories, folklore characters and stories, etc., but modern characters are also included now. Ema boards which have been offered are not resold.
