Japanese Ittobori Carved Wooden Bulls
$45.00
Quantity Available: 1
Inventory Number: 30237
NAME: Japanese ittobori style fighting bull pair. These look like winners as they are highly decorated, similar to the winners in dog sumo wrestling.
SIZE: The bulls are approximately 3-1/4" long and 1-3/4" tall, not including the rope. The stand is 7-7/8" x 2-1/2" x 5/8" high.
CONDITION: The stand has a little dust/dirt and there are a few small dents on the sides of the stand.
NOTES: Briefly, Ittobori is a carving technique. The name literally means "one chisel cut". You see the angles made by the chisel, they are not smoothed out. An art form that goes back hundreds of years.
This is probably made in Uwajima, Japan as Uwajima is one of the places where bull fighting is famous. It's not like the bull fighting the rest of the world is familiar with. It is more like a sumo contest. The bulls fight each other accompanied by their handler or farmer who sees that they do not really hurt each other. The winner is determined when one turns and runs. The bulls often "pets" and they have names.
