Ittobori style carving of "Tale of Shuzenji", a play by Kido Okamota, written in 1909. In short, master mask carver Yashao is asked to make a mask for deposed Shogun Minamoto Yoriie. Yashao is dissatisfied with the mask as it lacks "life". Yorii arrives to take the mask and Yashao's daughter, Katsuri. Later, a party of assassins raid Yoriie's household. Katsuri tries to shield Yoriie by wearing the mask but Yoriie is killed and Katsuri, mortally wounded, is once again at her father's house, with Yashao realizing the the mask accurately expressed Yoriie's destiny. In this small carving, Yashao measures 1-3/4" and sits with the mask in front of him. The stand is 2-3/8" x 1-1/2". Wonderful detail for size. In excellent condition. Little bit of label residue on front.
