Ittobori style carving of a Noh character. Briefly, Ittobori is a carving technique. The name literally means "one chisel cut". You see the angles made by the chisel, they are not smoothed out. An art form that goes back hundreds of years, the most popular subjects are Noh and the 12 Animals of the Zodiac. This Noh carving is of Okina. Okina is a piece that is performed as part of a Noh program for New Year's or other special occasion and is also the name of the character. The carving is a fabulous piece. It is very large, measuring 12-1/2" tall, 8" across and 6" deep. It is heavy, weighing in over 5 pounds and it is very detailed. Carved from one piece of wood, stained dark with minimal paint. The fan, the only separate piece, is painted gold as is his costume tassles. The various ties and strings are silver. A little wear on his hat, left part of his face and inner sleeve. There is a small 1/4" gouge in the wood which started a 3/4" crack, also on the inner sleeve. I don't know the age, but I do believe this piece is pretty old. Carved signature on the bottom.
