Kyoto Traditions is proud to be the official US source for kokeshi made by Kijidokoro-Sato. Kijidokoro-Sato is a Japanese family of craftsmen that have been making traditional Yajiro-style Kokeshi for 95 years.

Yajiro-style Kokeshi dolls feature a linear pattern on their head which resembles a cap.  Yajiro is a traditional village at the foot of Mt. Fubo where artisan-farmers developed this style of Kokeshi.

Kijidokoro-Sato was founded by the Master Craftsman Makoto Sato.  He studied the art of Kokeshi as a student of the Ogura school at the age of 9 years.  He remained a student of the school for 12 years and at the age of 21 years set out to found his own studio and unique style.

Makoto Sato passed on his craft to his son Seikou Sato, who has been practicing the art of Kokeshi crafting for 33 years.  Seikou Sato nows leads Kijidokoro-Sato and is currently supported by Mikiko Sato and Hideyuki Sato.
